China Implements New Regulations on The Coding of Lithium-ion Batteries Throughout Their Life Cycle!

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAC) of China recently officially released the "Lithium-ion Battery Coding Rules" (GB/T 45565-2025), requiring that from November 1, 2025, all lithium-ion battery products must be equipped with a unique identity code to achieve full-level coverage from single cells (such as lithium iron phosphate batteries) to battery systems. Through the "one pool, one code" mechanism, this policy provides full life cycle traceability for the production, circulation, use and recycling of lithium-ion batteries, significantly improving the safety management and industry supervision efficiency of lithium-ion batteries, while promoting the sustainable development of energy storage systems. The new regulations clarify that each lithium-ion battery code will contain production date, material type and traceability information to ensure its transparent application in energy storage systems. For example, subdivided categories such as lithium iron phosphate batteries can be accurately matched to the recycling process through coding to reduce resource waste. The State Administration for Market Regulation said that this move will accelerate the international connection of the lithium-ion battery standard system, provide a standardized model for the global lithium-ion battery industry chain, and promote the transformation of the new energy industry towards high efficiency and low carbon. In the future, relevant departments will deepen the promotion of standards and build a solid foundation for the safe production and green application of lithium-ion batteries.
