On May 28, 2025, the Xiamen Empirical Energy Storage Technology Research Institute officially began operation. Built by the Xiamen city government and battery giant CATL, the center covers 100,000 square meters and required a total investment of about 3 billion yuan. The launch was attended by industry leaders, Chinese officials, and members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Five High-Tech Labs Break New Ground
The institute is designed to be the world’s most complete one-stop verification center for energy storage systems. It includes five advanced labs, each setting new standards for testing scale and capability:
- Grid Integration Lab – the largest station-level testing facility of its kind, able to simulate up to 1,000 grid nodes.
- High-Voltage Safety Lab – tests equipment under extreme voltages up to 500 kV, aiming for zero-fire, zero-explosion design.
- Thermal Safety Lab – houses the world’s first indoor 20 MW calorimeter and can burn up to nine large containers at once.
- EMC Testing Lab – the only anechoic chamber able to fit a 40-foot container, testing under real high-power operation.
- Environmental Adaptation Lab – recreates conditions from -50°C to 100°C, high altitude, rain, dust, and salt spray.
Open Platform, Global Partners
The center has partnered with top certification bodies like TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, CSA Group, and CGC. It is intended to operate as an open platform, welcoming industry collaboration and developing new standards to improve safety and reliability across the storage sector.
