Hey folks, big news from the Australian renewables scene! Neoen, the French energy giant (now backed by Brookfield), has just pushed forward what could be the country's largest integrated wind and battery storage project. They've officially submitted their massive Bondo project for assessment under Australia's EPBC Act – a critical step in the approval process.
So, what's the deal with this project? Picture this: a 1.2-gigawatt wind farm with up to 149 turbines, paired with a whopping 3,200 megawatt-hours of battery storage. That's enough juice to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The unique part? It's planned for state-owned pine plantations in New South Wales' Snowy Mountains region, a move made possible by recent law changes.

The battery component alone is a game-changer. At 3.2GWh, it would surpass Neoen's own Collie battery (2,240 MWh) and even the upcoming Eraring battery (2,800 MWh) to become Australia's biggest. They're planning to split it into two 400MW/1,600MWh units, potentially connecting to different transmission lines in the area.

Why pine plantations? Fewer landowner headaches and less impact on native vegetation. Neoen's already tweaked the layout – reducing turbine count from 230 to 149 to avoid sensitive areas and keeping them at least 2.1km from homes.

Timeline-wise, we're looking at an environmental impact statement in 2026, construction possibly starting in 2028-2029, and a 4-6 year build-out. This isn't just another renewable project – it's a blueprint for how to deploy gigawatt-scale clean energy in Australia.
