Second Major Middle East Contract in Months

Just months after landing a 12.5GWh grid-scale storage contract in Saudi Arabia, BYD Energy Storage has signed another massive deal in the Middle East. The company inked an 11.275GWh cooperation agreement with Masdar, the Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy leader, to supply storage for the landmark RTC (Round The Clock) project.
The RTC project is located in Abu Dhabi and is the world's first GW-scale round-the-clock renewable energy initiative. Developed by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), it ranks as the largest and most technically advanced solar-plus-storage facility globally. The project is designed to solve the intermittency problem of renewables by deeply integrating photovoltaics with battery storage, delivering uninterrupted clean power 24/7.

A New Global Benchmark

Once fully operational, the RTC project will achieve stable GW-level baseload output at globally competitive electricity tariffs — a first of its kind. This milestone sets a new international benchmark and strengthens the UAE's leadership in renewable energy. The project's model is scalable and replicable, offering a practical blueprint for the world's growing demand for clean, secure, around-the-clock electricity.

BYD Haohan System Selected for the Job

BYD will deploy its Haohan energy storage system for the RTC project. The system is powered by BYD's world-largest 2710Ah dedicated prismatic blade battery, designed specifically for energy storage. With over 300% increase in single-cell capacity and a big jump in energy density, the battery management system complexity is reduced by 70-80%, boosting reliability significantly. This ensures safe, long-life operation and maximizes lifecycle value for 24/7 stable station output.

Simpler Design, Higher Density

The Haohan system features super-integrated, ultra-high-capacity design. Its smallest unit reaches 14.5MWh — the highest in the industry — while achieving 10MWh within an equivalent 20-foot container footprint. Fewer containers and less land needed simplify management, improve integration, and create a cleaner, safer storage station layout.

​ Built for Desert Conditions

The Haohan system operates reliably from -30°C to 55°C. For the Middle East's harsh desert conditions — intense heat, extreme dryness, and heavy sandstorms — it comes with IP66, the industry's highest full-machine protection rating. This ensures dust protection, wind-sand resistance, and high-temperature endurance for long-term stable operation.

Smart EMS for Precision Control

BYD Energy Storage provides its self-developed GC Master EMS for the project. The system can access millions of data points — 25% more than industry top-tier systems — with over 400% higher computing power, capable of managing more than 15GWh per single station. It performs real-time big-data analytics, precise device scheduling, safety early warning, and equipment health diagnostics for full-lifecycle efficient operation
